The mass shooting that took place March 27, 2023 at Covenant School in Nashville claimed the lives of 3 innocent 9 year old children, and 3 brave adults.
Our hearts broke. As a community we had to reconcile that gun violence is real and at our very doorstep. It was the wake-up-call none of us wanted, and none of us asked for.
Daycare facilities in our community are among the most vulnerable targets for gun violence. Children 5 and under are unable to comprehend the idea of violence, if what happened at Covenant happened at a local daycare the children would be too terrified and unable to flee. Educating young children, and babies, in active shooter drills is useless. Allowing teachers/administrators to carry or bear arms in schools is useless and dangerous. While we hope stricter gun laws will be put into place, strengthened security measures are necessary in the short-term.
Strong and expensive security updates are needed for most daycare facilities, including security guards. Daycares operate on impossibly tight budgets as it is. Who will foot the bill?
With the August 21st Special Session approaching to address school security our organization will be present to represent you: mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends of children in daycares in Tennessee.
Daycares have been left out of the plans to increase school security, but we plan to make our voices heard. The yearly cost per annum for security officers will average $50,000+, not to mention surveillance cameras, better doors, windows and locks.
